This seminar will provide an overview of some of the major concepts of cultural

studies. Each session will focus on a different concept and will provide historical

and theoretical contexts, while applying these concepts to relevant examples. The

concepts that we will discuss are the following: culture and popular culture,

representation and the media, race, class and gender, (urban) space, place and

cultural geography, postcolonialism, transnationalism, cosmopolitanism and

globalization.

The contexts will be provided by in-class viewings and discussions of the

following documentary films: The Stuart Hall Project (2013), I Am Not Your Negro

(2016), Citizen Jane: Battle for the City (2017), Human Flow (2017).
