Ein Vortrag des kroatischen Wissenschaftlers Dr. Sandro Knezović über die Rolle der EU in Südosteuropa (Veranstaltung auf Englisch)

Southeast Europe is unfortunately well-known for the security dysfunctions it suffered during the early 1990s and transitional difficulties it has experienced in the post-conflict period. The EU naturally had a big responsibility for the process of conflict-management, peace-keeping and long term consolidation of this part of Europe. The lecture will assess the EU’s displayed capacity to perform as an important factor of stability in the region, taking into account relevant elements of its Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) that was inaugurated at the time the conflict erupted. The lecture will also attempt to analyse in what way an EU accession perspective in the framework of the Stabilisation and Association Policy fostered processes of democratic transition and will try to foresee the possible pace of the finalisation of the enlargement of the EU concerning the remaining candidate states in Southeast Europe.

Dr. Sandro Knezović is a Senior Research Associate at the Department for International Economic and Political Relations of the Institute for Development and International Relations (IRMO) in Zagreb (Croatia). He earned his academic degree in Political Science at the Faculty of Political Science, University of Zagreb in 2008. His research focuses on IR topics, especially those related to international and European security and defence (CFSP/CSDP), the EU and NATO enlargement and their impact on the region of Southeast Europe. He was the first Croatian visiting research fellow at the renowned EU Institute for Security Studies in Paris and a visiting lecturer at several universities in Japan. Knezović additionally enriched his knowledge and research capacity through various research fellowships in the United States, Norway, Turkey and other countries. He is a member of numerous international expert teams and research networks and has participated as a researcher in many international research projects (including EU Framework programmes).
