Drawing 101: Develop Your Visual Skills (Basic skills and exercises)

Inhalt

Freehand Drawing

If you know how to write, you can learn how to draw. Drawing, like writing, is a skill that can be developed over time with practice.

For instance, do you know what your eyeballs are actually looking at? Can you mentally break the world down into shapes, lines, angles, sizes, colors, brightness, etc.?

In drawing, one has to focus on both holistic proportional relationships as well as focus on detail isolated from the whole. These two modes of seeing are what underpins a successful drawing.

Skills we will work on in this class:

  • recognizing edges, lines, and angles
  • understanding proportion and perspective
  • deciphering shadows, highlights, and gradations of tone

Come and learn what it means to “see!”

Train the eye and learn how to solve visual problems.

Develop the tools and techniques associated with artistic practice.

Understand the principles underlying all creative and representational drawing through practical exercises.

Weather permitting, we will likely meet at the Botanical Garden of Karlsruhe for at least one course.
