EX27: RoofKIT - sustainability in the building sector based on the solar decathlon Europe
Description
Initiated in 2002 by the United States Department of Energy, the Solar Decathlon (SD) is a university-level student competition for resource-efficient and energy-efficient architecture and engineering in the building sector. Eighteen university teams compete to design, build, and manage innovative residential buildings powered by renewable energy. We, Team RoofKIT, are competing for KIT this time in the Solar Decathlon Europe (SDE).
New technologies, joining principles, fasteners and also materials have to be developed to transform the future building stock into a new generation of qualitatively sustainable buildings.
RoofKIT consists mainly of students from the KIT faculties of architecture and civil engineering, geosciences, and environmental sciences. The team works closely with various KIT professorships but also with other universities, as well as cross-industry and supporting companies.
We are developing an urban planning blueprint for hitherto unused land resources of our cities: the roof surfaces. The goal is to understand the city as a social melting pot, urban material store and energy factory of the future. How can we create socio-economically fair housing without destroying our natural resources? How can we transform the building sector from a greenhouse gas emitting "climate elephant" to the CO2 storehouse of the future?
These parameters will be incorporated in a real-built demonstration unit, which will be created in May 2022 on the "Solar Campus" (exhibition space of SDE21/22). Here, all constructive measures, grade purity, novel fasteners, deconstructability, materials from secondary raw materials, the energy factory and the building as CO2 storage will be shown and explained to a public audience. RoofKIT wants to set new standards and inspire the public for the upcoming change!
On our excursion we will present our project and especially the development and planning of our demonstration unit. We will show you how the competition works and what our design can do. Here we cover the areas: Design, energy concept and materials.
Additionally we will give you an introduction into the world of sustainable building. We will introduce you to new materials and their research and show you how new techniques and materials can be used.
