Umberto Fugiglando studied Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Engineering at the Politecnico di Torino (Polytechnic University of Turin) in Italy and the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden. Since 2016, he has been research fellow lead at the Senseable City Lab of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In this position, he has been doing and leading research on data science applied to smart cities initiatives with a focus on human driving behaviour and mobility patterns in cities. Moreover, he has been involved in present and potential sponsors’ engagement and the presentation of the Lab activities to companies and organisations. As layers of networks and digital information blanket urban space, new approaches to the study of the built environment are emerging. The way we describe and understand cities is being radically transformed – as are the tools we use to design them. The mission of the Senseable City Lab is to anticipate these changes and study them from a critical point of view. The Lab is characterised by an omni-disciplinary approach including designers, planners, engineers, physicists, biologists, and social scientists.
