Visual Story Telling and Communication of Climate Change
Oct. 23, 2017, 11:30 - 15:30
Geb. 01.87
ZAK SR B 5.26, 5. OG
Rüppurrer Str. 1a, Haus B
76137 Karlsruhe

For decades, climate change has been a huge arena for heated debates, anxieties, and hope. The year 2015 was marked by an unprecedented worldwide agreement (Paris Agreement) to take active measures on this issue. However, with the US withdrawing from the accord and the issue being characterized as urgent, its effective communication is more relevant than ever. A series of research has demonstrated the effective use of visuals in communicating such debated, elusive and complex phenomenon. ‘Visuals’ in this course entail: images, video clips, films, public events and art work. They are more concerned with story-telling, rather than presenting charts and technical data. We will critically explore scientific findings on such communication and the impact of visuals on: perceptions, emotions, motivation, behaviors, and policies. You will engage in co-creating visual projects on a climate change issue related to your individual discipline. Sufficient command of English is important in order to actively participate in all activities. This is an interdisciplinary and interactive seminar – focus will be set on practical visual projects rather than written papers.
