Margins of Globalisation: Harsh Reality or Picturesque Décor?
Oct. 27, 2017, 14:00 - 19:00
Geb, 01.87
ZAK SR B 5.26, 5. OG
Rüppurrer Str. 1a, Haus B
76137 Karlsruhe

Near to one billion people live in slums, favelas, bidonvilles, i. e. at the margins of globalisation. These places have increasingly become an issue in the media, especially in films, where they are now a familiar setting of various genres. However, scholars and intellectuals have repeatedly criticised fi lm and media producers of exploiting slums for commercial (‘slumsploitation’) or aesthetic means (‘aestheticisation of poverty’), arguing that in such representations the underprivileged and marginalised have no voice, while their environment and life style become romanticised or exoticised. We will therefore discuss what aesthetics are most appropriate (or ethical) and raise the central question: ‘Who speaks – how – about whom?’

After a short introduction to globalisation and the history of cities, slums and their media representations, we will discuss some of the most significant historical examples – i. e. Los Olvidados (Mexico, 1950) – as well as more recent ones, such as City of God (2002), Slumdog Millionaire (2008) or Garbage Dreams (2009). Finally, we will apply our findings to other media as well, such as literature, music/ music videos or interactive web documentaries.
