CANCELLED Xenophobia: From your Neighbourhood to your Workplace.
Jan. 13, 2018, 10:00 - 17:00
Geb. 01.87
ZAK SR B05.26, 5. OG
Rüppurrer Str. 1a, Haus B, 5.OG
76137 Karlsruhe

The strong link between the rise of refugee numbers and xenophobia has been established and is present in the current political debates. But what is ‘xenophobia’ about? What is ‘xenophobic’, what is racist?

The ongoing rhetoric on xenophobia regards Americans electing Mr. Trump and the UK citizens approving BREXIT as two indicators of how strong the xenophobic sentiments have become in the Western world. In the aftermath many residents indicated that their votes were driven at least in part by anti-immigrant sentiments. For many, foreigners and the rise of numbers of refugees not only threaten their safety and culture, they are also seen as making an undeserving claim on resources perceived as scarce.

In this seminar xenophobia will be perceived as an element of political struggle and social action about who has the right to be taken care of by the state.

We will try to understand and explain xenophobia in relation to the current migration situation and will discuss xenophobic movements at the workplace and on the European labour market. Furthermore, we’ll explore subjective and empirical new ways of addressing and reducing the xenophobic sentiment and action.

Good English skills required.
