Dr. Asiem El Difraoui, born in 1965, is a political scientist and an author of books and documentary films. He studied economics and political science in Cairo, London, and Paris, and received his PhD from the Institut d’Études Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po). He was the editor in chief of IP Productions, a television news agency in Paris that specialises in the Middle East and the Arab world, and was a research fellow in the Near/Middle East and Africa Research Group of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP). He is currently a senior fellow at the Institute for Media and Communication Policy in Berlin. In addition to Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq, El Difraoui’s main research areas include Islamism, jihadism, youth culture in the Arab world, media policy, and Islam in Europe. For his work as an author and producer of documentaries and reports for film and TV, El Difraoui has received numerous international prizes (including UNESCO’s 2012 Enrico Fulchignoni Award).
